The “50” in front of the name means that this is the 50+h family entry in the tree.

The superscript “5” means that Myron Samuel Isaacs is the 5th generation on the Isaacs family tree.

The names in parentheses are the five previously generations of males names, i.e., Myron’s father is Stanley Myer Isaacs (4th generation), his grandfather is Myer Samuel Isaacs (3rd generation), and so on.

The first born child in a family is given a number indicating a new generation: Stanley Salant Isaacs if the 6th generation

The “84” in front of Stanley Salant Isaacs indicates that there is a separate entry for his family including spouse and children.

Generation No. 1

1.       MYER SAMUEL1 ISAACS was born Abt. 1758.  He married REBECCA SAMUELS November 11, 1796, daughter of SAMUEL REYZER and BREINE IZAKS.  She was born Abt. 1773.

Notes for MYER SAMUEL ISAACS:

Myer Samuel Isaacs lived in Leeuwarden, Friesland, Holland, until impoverished by the Napoleonic wars. His name in Dutch was Myer Isaks or Meijer Izaak; his Hebrew name was Myer, son of Samuel Isaacs. The Dutch also spell the name Meyer or Meijer or Meier. Isaacs also seemed to be spelled variously as Isaac or Izak or Yzaak. Napoleon required individuals to have full names. His father-in-law's name was Samuel Jacobs Reyzer and his mother-in-laws name was Breine Izaks.     Isaacs' profession, listed as banker, may be been a pawnbroker or merchant, which was a type of banker in the early 1800's.

According to the tax register of the time, he is listed as a merchant, living in the Kleine Kerkstreet (Kirkstraat) 1808.  He was born around 1758. He purchased the house in 1807 for 2,305 carg. In 1810, he borrows 4,000 car. guilders from Breine Izaks, Rebecca's mother, using their furniture as security for the debt. The same research indicates that he and his wife had 10 children that survived, many more than had been previously known. Source: research conducted by Ype Brouwers, geneologist living in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, January - February 2004, letters and e-mails sent to John Isaacs

Upon moving to London in 1814 to escape war and economic turmoil, he supported his family by teaching. He also became a burial minister. Four of his five sons became rabbis. Myer Samuel Isaacs' father is listed as Izaak (e-mail from Chaim Caran caranchaim@ailatcity.co.il, January 20, 2004)

Notes for JOHN ISAACS ??:

It is not totally clear whether John Isaacs was one of the sons of Myer Samuel Isaacs, who moved with his family from Leewarden, Holland to London in 1814.  Some accounts of what may be his brothers described four sons and others five sons.

One source lists John Isaacs, the brother of Jacob Isaacs, as one of the early free immigrants to Australia.  He arrived with his wife Rosa on April 24, 1833 on the ship "Enchantress." Even this book describes confusion over several John Isaacs.

John Isaacs was one of the early leaders of the Sydney Synagogue, and he was very active in the Jewish community.  He also had a house and shop in George Street.  He stood as a candidate for the Bourke Ward at the first Municipal election and was a freemason.

The account of his life suggests that he and his wife were childless, and speculates that they moved back to London before their deaths.

Notes for EPHRAIM SAMUEL(S):

When Lewis Isaacs died in 1869, Rev. David Isaacs and Mrs. Ephraim Samuel(s) were listed as siblings to Lewis Isaacs.  Thus Mrs. Ephraim Samuel(s) -- it is listed with and without an "s" -- clearly is one of the sisters of Samuel, David, Jacob and Lewis who married Ephraim Samuel(s).  Unfortunately, her maiden name is not listed, so it is not clear which sister it is. 5.  RABBI DAVID MYER2 ISAACS (MYER SAMUEL1) was born 1810 in Leeuwarden, Holland, and died May 01, 1879 in Southport, England near Liverpool.  He married ESTHER LEVY 1832.  She was born 1817, and died 1886.

Notes for RABBI DAVID MYER ISAACS:

David Myer Isaacs was born in 1810 in Leeuwarden, Holland.  He moved with his parents to London, England in 1814.  He was placed under the tutelage of Solomon Herschell, then Chief Rabbi of the Jews of Great Britain.

His first congregation was in Bristol, England in about 1832, the same year he married Esther Levy, daughter of Joel Levy and Rachel Joseph.  He was the first rabbi in England to deliver regularly sermons in English.  In 1835, be began serving the ministry in Liverpool, where he remained for 35 years.  He also served for about 20 years as Professor at the Liverpool College, where he taught Hebrew and oriental literature.  Finally, he settled in Manchester, England.  For many years, he alternated preaching at both Liverpool and Manchester.  In 1837, he delivered a funeral oration on the occasion of the burial of King William IV.

An obituary in "The Jewish Messenger," founded by his brother Samuel Myer Isaacs, said: "His name and fame were not confined to Great Britain.  His bold and manly utterances, his independent bearing, his unswerving and uncompromising adherence to the Judaism of his fathers, his matchless eloquence and power as a pulpit orator, were themes of admiration in all countries where English Jews or their descendants had residence."

The obituary also compares the two brothers, David and Samuel, saying they closely resembled each other in voice and manner, as well as physical build.  It goes on "With them, their Judaism was not confined to the synagogue; but ever ready as they were to aid all causes that tended to the improvement of their people, they never shirked their duties as citizens of the commonweath, and advocated and substantially turthered? all public institutions."

[The same obituary describes him as the youngest of five brothers.]

In another obituary, he was described as rigidly orthodox and of the "old school," although "fairly tolerant" of other views.  He was also described as being "gifted with a forcible, somewhat impulsive and eloquent style of oratory, tinged with a peculiarly caustic humor, he became very popular as a preacher."

In 1872, he traveled to New York to be present at the 70th birthday of his brother, Samuel Myer Isaacs (Jewish Chronicle, December 27, 1872)

He died on May 1, 1879.

The Register of Births and Burials of the Old Hebrew Congregation (Elizabeth Ford has a copy), March 21, 1886, lists the birth dates of Joel, Elias, Julia, Aragbella, Sarah, Caroline and Myer David. According to these records, two children died in their first year, Elias and Caroline.

Notes for MYER DAVID ISAACS:

Myer David Isaacs was a playwright and actor in Sydney.  He was born in 1851 by one estimate, probably in London, England, and probably earlier than 1851.  At some point he moved to Australia, where his uncle Jacob Myer Isaacs already lived.  An April 12, 1856 article in "The People's Advocate" wrote of him as the author of comedietta.  On November 2, 1860, another of his plays, again a comedy, was performed in Sydney, and was reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald.

He then apparently spent a couple of years as newspaper editor of "The Miner and General Advertiser" in Lambing Flat - Burrangong on the newly discovered gold fields in the West of New South Wales.  He apparently was an able journalist and a powerful orator.  He became involved in several institutions: secretary of the Burrangong Race Club, founder and chairman of the Burrangong Amateur Dramatic Society, organized a committee for the relief of the "Victims of the Recent Murderous Outrage," president of the Burrangong Prospecting Association and the Diggers' Mutual Society and secretary of a move to secure better parliamentary representation of the area.

He authored another play, "The Battle of Life," which was performed in 1862 in Sydney.  He returned to the gold fields, and was active in pressing for better police protection of the gold transports and for better roads in the area.  He also appeared to practice some law.

In 1865, he moved to Brisbane, where his new play "The Bell of Brisbane or the Lady of Queensland" was performed.

Notes for MAX LICHTENSTEIN:

Max was born Uschisoff, son of Doctor Joseph (c.1795-c.1885, ex Vitebsk) and Freda, in Mesel (Memel?), North Germany and trained to be a Doctor there.  He joined his cousin Louis Paykel, also a son of a Doctor, (born in Odessa, Russia in 1873) at the Hospital and Medical College, Ekaterinoslav, South Russia (now known as Dnepropetrovsk) to complete medical studies.  Between 1835 and 1917 Jews in Russia were forced by law to live in the "Pale of Settlement", an area stretching between the Baltic and the Black Sea and embracing Odessa and Ekaterinoslav.  Poverty and anti-Semitism were rife.  Whenever a disaster such as an outbreak of cholera or animal disease occurred the Jews were blamed and a wave of pogroms would erupt.  They would be beaten tortured and murdered by mobs of Cossacks who roamed through the streets and burnt houses.  In 1827 the Tsar decreed that each Jewish community would deliver up a quota of military recruits.  They were to serve 25 years from the age of 18 but could be drafted from 12.  Whilst in the Army, strenuous efforts were made to convert them to Christianity.  Families not only lost their sons but their religious succession.  (See  www.friends-partners.org/partners/beyond...pale/index.htm/ )

In 1893, probably mid-summer, Max and Louis escaped Russia, possibly under hay in a cart and are thought to have travelled across Europe bribing border guards. They caught a ship to New York, where they learnt English at night school.  They probably also lived in Sheboygan near Milwaukee where Louis' brothers and sisters had settled.  Albert and Max Paykel later married their cousins (Max Uschisoff's sisters) Rika (1865-1930) and Ida (1867-1942), the girls having changed their surnames to Usow.  Both couples plus Louis' younger sister Leah and her husband Benjamin Burman migrated to New Zealand between 1897 and 1900.

After about a year Max and Louis went to Belgium and sailed from Antwerp for Australia in the SS Somerfield, arriving in Port Adelaide early in 1895.  While Louis worked in Adelaide, Max visited Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and sailed on to Auckland, arriving in May 1895 with £5 in his pocket but he was, at least, in a country free from oppression.  Max soon advised Louis of the business opportunities presented by the flourishing Kauri Gum industry in Northland and Louis joined him, arriving with less in his pocket than had Max.  Believing he would be better accepted in business, Louis, son of Aaron, changed he name to Louis Arnoldson.  Peter Lichtenstein thinks his grandfather Max simply adopted the name of the European Principality to rid himself of his Russian surname.

Kauri gum is the resin of kauri trees.  It oozes through fractures in the bark and congeals, forming lumps which fall to the ground where it becomes buried by layers of forest debris.  Some was found on the surface but most was found at different depths and recovered by diggers.  They drove metal rods into the ground to detect the deposits.  The Northern gumfields were no land of milk and honey, but a wasteland of wet rushes, scrub and coarse fern.  The magnificent kauri forests of thousands of years ago had long since vanished.  (David notes that the Kauri was widely and extensively exploited from the early 1800's until it was almost totally cleared by the 1930's but. there are still lots in the Waipoua Kauri Forest.  Graham recalls piles of limbs of kauri trees being burnt on Don McCathies's farm at upper Waiwera around the late 1930's.  The knot-free trunks were lopped at the first branch, often over a hundred feet from the ground.  The waste was appalling by modern standards).  The gum was cleaned of dirt and exported, mainly to America and England where it was an important constituent of high grade varnish and, from 1910, in the manufacture of linoleum.  The Maoris used gum for chewing (it was passed from mouth to mouth), to light fires and for tattooing.

By the end of 1895 the cousins had opened their first store at Matakohe and established a firm named Lichtenstein and Arnoldson, Kauri Gum Merchants, Importers and Storekeepers.  The store was in three divisions - a general store, one for produce of all kinds, the third for kauri gum.  Gum would be brought by diggers to Matakohe and the cousins would frequently travel around gumfields in Northern and Southern Wairoa purchasing large quantities.  It was taken in bags on horse drawn carts to the wharf on Kaipara Harbour, by steamer to Helensville and by train to Auckland, the same route in reverse bringing in supplies and stock for the shop.  The families all pitched in getting the goods up from the wharf.

Even though they had virtually no capital it was not long before they were prospering and the business expanded rapidly.  Within a year two more stores were opened - at Ru Point and Opitonui where Max also ran the local Post and Telegraph Office which was later burnt down.  Soon they took up a lease of some 40,000 acres of native land and started buying gum from the diggers who were mainly Maori and Dalmatians.  The gum was all shapes and sizes and covered with dirt which the diggers would scrape off.  As business prospered other leases were acquired and in the summer as many as 100 gum diggers would be employed.

The prosperous times did not last.  The 1930's came and with them the Great Depression.  The Kauri Gum Industry collapsed completely.  Gum became unsaleable due to a cheap synthetic substitute being developed for varnish and linoleum manufacture.  Louis, said to be one of the first car owners in Auckland, died on 1 Feb 1933 when his car crashed into a horse drawn lorry in Beach Road, near Auckland Railway Station, probably due to a heart attack.

Max continued the business concentrating on property purchase and management including Brighton Hall Flats in Brighton Road, Parnell - Spanish Mission style, flats in Royal Oak and office/shops in Eden Terrace.  Patsy remembers doing the rounds of these premises with her grandfather, collecting the rent.

Notes for NATHANIEL JOHN ISAACS:

There is conflicting evidence whether he was named Nathaniel or Nathan.

Nathaniel (or Nathan) John Isaacs was born in 1847 in Sydney, Australia, and died at age 41 on February 24, 1888.  He was married to Kate Levi, and they had six children.  He moved to New Zealand in about 1868.  He was employed for some years as a commercial traveler for Messrs. Lewis Bros. of Auckland.  In about 1876, he settled in Wellington, New Zealand, where he started a business as an auctioneer.  Later he became a licensed victualler, then auctioneer again, and then landlord of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel.

Notes for BARNARD DAVID ISAACS:

Professor Barnard (Barney) Haysack was born in 1856 as Barnard Isaacs.  There is some confusion whether his name was Barnard or Barnett.  At some point he changed his name to Haysack.  An obituary from the May 13, 1904 Bayswater Chronicle describes him as Professor Haysack, "one of the foremost teachers of oratory" in England.  The obituary says that he "inherited his father's gifts of both intellect and eloquence, and was equally successful in the fields of oratory, elocution and literature.  As a teacher he had few rivals, some of the most prominent members of both Houses of Parliament being his pupils." He died at the age of 47.

Notes for MICHAEL MORRIS LEWIS:

MICHAEL MORRIS LEWIS (Mick): Born 21/03/1868 (Tephilloth).      Died 02/08/1947

Buried Row A4, Plot 19 in Old Hebrew Area, Waikumete Cemetery as advised by Mary Watson 28/03/99.

Marriage: Michael Morris LEWIS 1897 Folio 3695 married Daisy BOYD.

Probate: Michael Morris LEWIS died 12 Aug 1947 BBAE 1570 0978/47 Auckland.

Michael commenced his commercial career working for a firm of jewellers, then with Kempthorne Prosser & Co., wholesale druggists.  It was with the mercantile house of P. Hayman & Co., however, that he became so well identified.  Their head office was in a handsome Edwardian commercial building on the north side of Customs St.,East, not far from Queen St., Auckland.  (Still standing in 1999, identifiable by a plaque over the main entrance with intertwined letters "P.H." Sadly, the building will probably become a casualty of the Britomart development scheme.)  He was variously Senior Traveller, Auckland Warehouse Manager, Wellington Manager and finally General Manager.  He was well regarded in the commercial world of his day.

In 1897 Michael married Daisy Boyd, born 1878, died 04/04/1948.  I still (1999) have her engagement ring containing three rubies, said to be the best ring in Hayman & Co's stock at the time.  She was regarded askance by the Lewis family because, although good looking, she was a Gentile and her antecedents were comparatively modest.  Her non-Jewish status no doubt offended her mother in law Rebecca, daughter of a Rabbi.  Her father was said to be the regimental tailor of an imperial regiment stationed in New Zealand during the Maori Wars.  Her Mother was said to be French, her maiden name was Ceraneau or Cheraneau and she lived to be 100 or so.
